Yalutorovsk today

Yalutorovsk today is a
center of a well-developed agricultural district within the Tyumen
region. The population of the town numbers 37 thousand of people. The
economics is based on food, construction, and wood processing industries.
Historical outlook of the town has been preserved up to now. There are a
lot of old-time wooden buildings, a number of stone merchants’ estates,
and some memorials of industrial architecture there. Within the town
there still exists a park planted by the Decembrists. Though over the
Soviet regime the outlook of the town suffered great losses. In 1931
Sretenski church was demolished, which had for a long time been an
architectural and spiritual symbol of the town. Cultural life of
Yalutorovsk today is represented by a specialized educational
institutions, among which are a subsidiary of the Tyumen Institute for
Arts and Culture, a Palace of Culture, some clubs and libraries, a
center for ethnic handicrafts, a center for ethnic culture, musical and
creative groups. The major cultural objects well known within this
country are the Decembrists’ houses of A. Muravjev-Apostol and I.
Yakushkin. In 1970 Yalutorovsk was enlisted among historical towns of
Russia.
