Ascension Church

Церковь Вознесения. XVII в.

Among numerous temples of Great Ustyug Ascension church differs from all the others by its exclusive riches of decorative furniture which makes it similar to known temples of "regal" Moscow - Trinity church in Nikitniki (1628-1654) and Christmas church in Putinki (1649-1652).

The stone Ascension Church was erected in 1648 "with diligence and money" of the richest Ustyug’s merchant, Moscow "visitor" Nikifor Revyakin. It looked like a complex architectural construction "of about eleven chapters" in XVII century. Later as a result of reconstruction the Ascension church has undergone some changes.

The picturesque view of Ascension church is in indissoluble connection with special expressiveness of forms of the external rich decoration giving to all monument celebratory elegance. High art value of the interior Ascension church - represents integral assembly of monuments of Ustyug’s icon making and iconostases art of XVIII century.

Majestic five-circled carved golden iconostases of Ascension church, erected in 40-50th of XVIII century, - one of the earliest saved baroque iconostases of Great Ustyug.

Now in Ascension church the following exhibitions are opened: "Great devotees of the Russian land, sacred Prokopiy and John, Ustyug’s wonder makers", " Iconostases of Great Ustyug, ornamental carving, wooden sculpture ". The most valuable exhibits from Ustyug’s memorial estate presented at these exhibitions reflect high art culture of Ustyug region.
