Cathedral of Archangel Michael

Cathedral of Archangel
Michael is the most ancient monastery of Great Ustyug. According to
annuals, it was founded by monk Kiprian in 1212 " at the lakes near a
talus ".
It is the most full saved
monastic complex. Its basic stone constructions are of the middle of
XVII century.
The history of the main
temple of the monastery is of almost eight centuries. The elegant and
picturesque wooden cathedral of Archangel Michael " about thirteen tops
" was one of the most interesting constructions of ancient Ustyug. The
stone temple is constructed with support of Ustyug’s merchant Nikifor
Revyakin in 1653-1656. It was the first five-domed,four-pillared temple,
surrounded from three sides by galleries, with a Belltower at the
northwest corner. Severity and simplicity, laconism of decorative
furniture are typical features of the external shape of the cathedral.
Now the cathedral of
Archangel Michael of Michael-Archangel monastery, one of the most
interesting monuments of Ustyug’s stone architecture of the middle of
XVII century, is an object of museum display.
