Tekutjev (1839-1916)

The first-guild merchant
Andrei Tekutjev contributed a lot to cultural development of Tyumen at
the end of the XIXth and the beginning of the XXth centuries. In
different periods he was a member of the Committee on food-stuff
procurement for underprivileged population in Tyumen, Chairman of the
Committee on the orphans’ charge at the Vladimirski vocational school,
curchwarden of the Spasski church, Head of the Commission on paving
streets and slaughter-house arrangement. In 1899-1911 Andrei Tekutjev
was Head of Tyumen.
In 1899 Tekutjev opened a school and a library in honour of the 100th
anniversary of Pushkin’s birthday. Tekutjev is by right considered the
founder of the Tyumen theatre. Due to his efforts a hospital for 128
beds was built in Tyumen. In the last years of his life Tekutjev
initiated another hospital, where an X-ray laboratory was installed
alongside with other medicine achievements. Tekutjev was awarded the
title of ‘the Honorary citizen of Tyumen’ for his contribution to the
town’s development and for his verified philanthropic activities.
