Tyumen Today

Tyumen today is by right
regarded as an important administrative, economic, production, cultural,
and educational center in the Ural-Siberian area. The population of
Tyumen exceeds 550 thousand people.
In 1963 the Tyumen Industrial Institution was founded. By now it has
developed into the Oil & Gas university, and has become one of the
largest regional centers preparing qualified specialists for the energy
sector. Apart from this, the University is a prominent research and
cultural center of the city. Under its auspices a number of research
institutions have been initiated, involved in a wide range of
fundamental and applied aspects of the regional development. Over the
last years new humanitarian departments have been dynamically developing.
Through the efforts of V. Kopylov, Director of the Urals research
institution for history, science and technology, a museum has been
initiated at the University. The museum contains a lot of unique
exhibits and technological items related to the history of Tyumen
development.
In 1973 on the basis of the Tyumen Pedagogical college the Tyumen State
University was founded. At present it is considered on of the largest
educational institutions in Russian Federation. The University has got a
sound economic and technological basis, and a highly qualified staff of
professors. The University carries out large-scale research and
publishing activities.
In 1974 the Arts college was opened in Tyumen. Since then it has become
an important cultural center, and has influenced several generations of
musicians, actors, artists and designers, who now work in the city. By
present the subsidiaries of the Ural State Conservatory and of the Ural
State Architectural and Arts Academy have been opened on the basis of
the college.
In 1990 the Tyumen State Institution of Arts and Culture was organized,
which prepares a wide range of specialists for culture and education, as
well as for travel agencies and mass media. A number of creative groups
exist at the institution, so that students might have ample
opportunities to up-grade their skills in music, arts and theatre
performance.
Academic science in Tyumen is represented by the Scientific Center of
the Siberian branch, Russian academy of sciences. It incorporates
Institute of the Earth’s Cryosphere, and Institute for Northern
Development. The institutions are engaged in comprehensive fundamental
and applied researches targeted at environment and ecology of the North,
legislative regulations in the fuel sector, IT researches, aspects of
regional development, and a lot of other directions.

The largest centers for
studying and popularization of regional historical and cultural
hereditary are presented by the Tyumen Museum of local lore, history and
economy named after I. Slovtsov, and the Tyumen Arts Museum. Apart from
these, there are some minor museums that are of interest from the point
of view of the Tyumen’s history. Among them there is a museum of the
Kaslinsk castling, a railway road museum, a library for family reading
named after A. Pushkin, a museum of the musical publisher A. Aphromeyev
at the Tyumen Arts college.
In 1990 a great work was accomplished by the local historians as to
re-wising and bringing to life obscured pages of the Tyumen history.
Much has been done by a publishing house of Yuri Mandryka that published
a lot of unique books by leading Siberian historians, and introduced
forgotten names.
Theatrical art in Tyumen is represented by the Tyumen State Drama
Theatre, the Puppets’ theatre, the Angagement theatre, and some other
theatrical companies. Tyumen theatres go on tours to Moscow. The Tyumen
State Concert Hall carries out a lot of major projects targeted at
up-grading musical culture of Tyumenians.
