The structure of Vologda’s fauna is defined by its position in wood zone near to the borders of both taiga and mixed wood. Therefore in expositions of Natural department typical taiga’s animals (an elk, a wood-grouse, a hazel grouse, etc.), animals of are all wood zones (a lynx, squirrel, a brown bear), inhabitants of mixed woods (a wood marten, black polecat, a green woodpecker, etc.) are widely presented. Here it is possible to meet a white hair and a snowy owl which live both in taiga and tundra, and also the animals widespread in various zones: the fox, the wolf. There is a variety of birds (in this land there are than 230 kinds of birds) in museum.

The map "Wood sanctuaries of Totma" acquaints visitors with especially protected natural territories of Totma . The most valuable are constant complex (landscape) sanctuaries (Izoniha, Zaozersky, Sondugsky, Njushmensky pine forests) which territory is withdrawn from economic use. For prevention of full disappearance of rare plants in 1999 botanical sanctuary "Pinga" was founded in Totma. Two huge stones-boulders "Elk" and "Iron" are also under protection, as they represent special research, aesthetic and cultural value.
