Museum of the City
Duma

The building of the city
Duma constructed in the 30th years of the XIXth century is regarded as a
prominent architectural memorial that forms a historical center of
Tyumen. The building is decorated with a tower striking clock
manufactured by the farmer A. Trusov from the Uspenski district. At
present the ground floor of the building contains exhibition halls of
the Tyumen museum of local lore, history and economy. The halls are
intended for regular exhibitions. On the first floor there is a
stationary exposition ‘Museum and Nature’ representing palaeontological
exhibits, flora and fauna of the Tyumen region. A skeleton of a mammoth
is by right considered a most impressive exhibit. Skeletons of a bison
and a fleecy rhinoceros found in the vicinities of Tyumen at the end of
the XIXth century are also of great interest.
Apart from
palaeontological exhibits the exposition contains a rich zoological
collection including stuffed animals and birds dwelling within the
Tyumen region. Among them there are such rare types as a pink flamingo
and some others. The entomological collection presents about 10 thousand
insects. The most ancient samples out of the palaeobotany collection can
be dated the tertiary period, that is 20-25 million years ago.
