Handicraft Trades

In 1897 a commission was
initiated at the Tobolsk museum for studying handicraft works in the
Tobolsk region. The commission was targeted at studying ethnical
traditions and support of local craftsmen, as well as at picking up the
most interesting exhibits for the museum.
Since the beginning of the XVIIIth century Tobolsk became known for its
armouries, where masters from Tula and Suzdal worked. Despite the
muskets were made under the technologies brought from outside, their
decorative patterns related to local motives.
The exposition presents wooden tableware, wicker items, and varied
decorative patterns. Of enormous interest are carving products that has
made Tobolsk well known outside Siberia. The collection also contains a
lot of handicraft species, i.e. metal dishes, painted boxes and cases
that can be referred to as the highest achievements of handicraft
schools.
