The 300th anniversary of Georg Steller In 2009 scientific community of Russia and Germany will celebrate the 300th anniversary of outstanding naturalist Georg Wilhelm Steller. Georg Wilhelm Steller was born in 1709 in Bad-Windsheim, Germany. In 1937 this young, showing considerable promise, researcher became junior scientific assistant of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The top point of his research activity was participation in the Second Kamchatka Expedition headed by Vitus Bering. During the expedition Georg Steller made a big contribution into study of flora and fauna of Siberia, Kamtchatka and Alaska coast. He was the first and the last scientist who saw and described the sea-cow (or Steller sea-cow), a large animal of Sirenian family, fully exterminated in the middle of the XVIII century. In 1746 on the way back from the expedition to Saint-Petersburg Georg Steller got a bad cold and died in Tyumen linking his fate with Siberia forever. In commemoration of G. Steller the Institute of Humanitarian Studies under Tyumen State University organizes annual international conference “Steller Readings” from 2004. In 2009, the year of the 300th anniversary of Georg Steller, Tyumen State University jointly with Tyumen Research Centre of SB RAS intends to organize a conference and other events.
