John Predtechi's church

Construction of John Predtechi’s church began in 1715 in the Krasnoye village, which that time was in vicinity of Solikamsk. The plan of construction of the temple belonged to bishop of Vyatsk and Great Perm Alex. Originally it was conducted with support of salt maker I.Surovtsev. The bottom throne of church was consecrated in 1728. In 1731 the church was given as a dowry to Surovtsev’s daughter Natalia who married Grigory Demidov. Construction of the top floor of church was completed by A.Turchaninov who got village Krasnoye after death of Demidov in 1772.

John Predtechi's church is the unique sample of traditions of Russian North temple architecture. Besides the widespread symbolical lay-out of the temple in the form of the ship, personifying the world as the everyday sea, and a temple as the ship on which it can be crossed, the external shape of church of John Predtechi reminds a sailing ship. For city in which Babinov’s road was the major link with the Great Siberian way on which groups of trailblazers of Eastern Siberia and Russian America at that time followed originated, the architecture of church was a bright symbol of promotion of Russian orthodox culture on the East.
