Cross-erection cathedral

As at the beginning of XX century the temples of Saint Nikolaev monastery were not enough for an increased inflow of the people made pilgrimage to the relics of Saint Simeon of Verhoture the decision to construct Cross-erection cathedral.

Cross-erection cathedral was founded on September, 12th, 1905 - on the holiday of transferring the relics of Saint Simeon Wonder Maker. On September, 11th, 1913, during celebrating the 300 anniversary of Romanovs dynasty Cross-erection cathedral became one of the greatest temples in Russia. It was capable to place simultaneously near 4000 people. Grandeur of the cathedral as though confirmed the value of Verhoture in an orthodox life of Russia. The imagination of contemporaries was amazed with beauty of its furniture. Domes of the cathedral were covered by smooth sheet zinc with waybills. Its central iconostasis was made of faience at Moscow factory of M.S. Kuznetsov.

In 1919 the Soviet authority was established in Verhoture. Cross-erection cathedral was closed for believers. Its faience iconostasis was broken. After that the Cross-erection cathedral has been a cinema, and later, a colony for the minor criminals.

In 1990 Saint Nikolaev monastery was given back to Orthodox Church.
