Museum of local
lore

The history of Salekhard
museum started in 1906 when father Irinarkh (I.S. Shemanovsky), superior
of Obdorsk Orthodox mission presented collection of books and
ethnographic exhibits for public overview.
In 2003 a new building of Salekhard museum named after I.S. Shemanovsky
was opened for visitors. The museum celebrated its centenary not a long
time ago. In the new building there are permanent expositions devoted to
nature, history and ethnography of Yamal. Thematic exhibitions take
place in the exhibition hall on regular basis. Guest exhibitors are
often represented by the biggest museums of Russia. Besides traditional
forms of exposition activity the museum supports up-to-date information
technologies. Recently a virtual branch of the Russian Museum was open
here. It gives opportunity to Yamal schoolchildren and students being
far from large cultural centres to follow the events taking place in the
Russian Museum in real time, to get access to new multimedia programmes
representing unique collection of the Museum, and to get remote
education.
