Museum of aviation
The Museum of aviation
stands apart among Salekhard attractions. The museum is situation not
far from the city airport. Its unique exhibits represent basic types of
aircrafts used in development of Tyumen north.
One of the pioneers of freight transportation and passenger traffic on
Yamal is Li-2. It carried expeditions of surveyors routing the railway
Salekhard - Igarka, geologists, builders, fishermen and other Northern
workers.
Initially the airport of
Salekhard accepted big aircrafts only in winter when the ground runway
was firm due to low temperature. In summer hydroport was the main tool
connecting Salekhard with external world. There is An-2V airplane in the
museum. For a long time it has been linking Salekhard with
difficult-to-access corners of Yamal.
From 1964 regular flights to Tyumen, Tazovsky and Tarko-Sale on An-24
were introduced. From summer 1968 there are regular flights to Moscow.
Transport aircraft An-26 was indispensable for freight transportation in
the conditions of the North.
In 1997 “Yamal” air
company was created to play the role of major carrier in Yamalo-Nenetsky
autonomous okrug. Today it links many towns and settlements of Yamal
between themselves and with the “big land”. Helicopter flights linking
towns with difficult-to-access areas are of great social importance.
