Wooden
architecture

There are a lot of wooden
buildings in Ishym that are considered an important architectural
ingredient of the town. The most interesting are the merchants’ estates
built in XIX-XX centuries. The merchant class would stick to a
patriarchal way of life and believed that wooden houses were more sound
and conventional. At the same time the merchants, being acquainted with
stone architecture of the capital, would try to introduce some
decorative elements of the latter into local wooden architecture. Such
aesthetic demands resulted in appearing original samples of carving that
could only be found in Siberian towns like Ishym. Regrettably, fire and
ages did not spare many unique samples of Siberian wooden architecture.
At present a task of preserving an original architectural heritage is
put among top priorities.
