The Epiphany
Cathedral

The Epiphany Cathedral is
regarded as an important historical and cultural symbol of the town. It
was the first stone church in Ishym. It was built in 1782, after the
Korkin sloboda was declared the town of Ishym under the decree of
Ekaterina II. The architectural style of the cathedral is often referred
to as the so called ‘Siberian baroque’ with classicism elements. The
cathedral is located on the high river bank, and initially could be well
observed from every part of the town. Soon after the Soviet regime was
established all church values were withdrawn, and in 1930 the cathedral
was closed. Over decades the cathedral had been destroyed. It was at the
end of the XXth century that on the citizens’ initiative the cathedral
got reconstructed.
