Along the Streets

Unlike many industrial
centers in Siberia Ishym has managed to preserve its historical outlook.
Buildings of varied architectural styles and epochs co-exist
harmonically with each other. The rivers Ishym and Karassul
predetermined a linear outlay of the town. Prevailing are one and
two-story buildings, as well as houses built in the so called ‘merchant’
style. Modern buildings are being smoothly incorporated within the
historical architecture. The historical center of Ishym is situated at
the square of the Epiphany cathedral. The famous Nikolskaya fair has
been held there.
By the time modern architectural styles of Central Russia reached Ishym
they had got desperately out of date. In Siberia they were transformed
into mixture of varied styles with folk decorative motives. Some
mansions of merchants survived till today, and can demonstrate original
examples of compromising between stone and wooden building.
Ishym is situated on a picturesque plane crossed with a lot of winding
rivers and lakes. Since Ishym possesses a unique historical colour, it
can by right be considered a typical merchant town of Siberia.
