A Town Born

In 1632 in the mouth of
the Ishym river a burg was built for protection of local people against
the khan Kuchum. That was the first fortress from which development of
the Ishym by the Russians got started. At present Ust-Ishym settlement
is located here.
In 1687 near the Ishym burg the Korkin sloboda was built. Construction
works were supervised by Piotr Onofriev, a Tobolsk nobleman. In 1720
Peter I introduced an administrative territorial division by districts.
The Korkin sloboda became the district center. In 1760 exiled serfs were
transported to the Korkina sloboda, who were its first inhabitants. By
the middle of the XVIIIthe century annexation of prosperous agricultural
lands in the vicinities of Ishym had been completed by the Russians. In
1782 under the decree of Ekaterina II the Korkina sloboda was given the
status of a town later named Ishym.
